Cold November air nips at my bare fingers, and I mutter a curse. Leaving my gloves at home isn’t the dumbest thing I’ve done lately, but it’s close.

You should’ve let Tony drive you home.

Pulling my jacket tighter around me, I quicken my pace. It’s just a few blocks between the diner and my apartment, but the cold air makes it feel like miles.

Flurries start to swirl, prompting me to walk a little faster. I’m just making my way across the Hart Street Bridge when something catches my eye.

A man’s standing next to the concrete barrier, looking down into the frigid water below.

I stop.

Without a backwards glance, he places one leg over the edge.

My heart pounds in my chest. “No!”

His head jerks up, and there, under the lights of the city, my eyes lock with the man who left his watch on my counter.

I’m paralyzed.

So is he.

Thank God.

People keep walking. Cars keep moving. But my eyes remain fixed on the man straddling the concrete barrier—the only thing that’s keeping him from plunging into the icy river below us. I don’t know his name. I don’t know why he’s dressed like a beggar, and I certainly don’t know why he left his Rolex on my counter.

But in this moment, none of that matters.

I make sure the street is clear before walking across, keeping my movements slow as I approach him. The last thing I want to do is freak him out. For now, one leg is still on this side of the barrier, giving me hope that maybe he doesn’t really want to die tonight. Needing the support it provides, I hold onto the cold concrete and pray I say the right thing.

“What are you—”

“Leave me alone, Carrie.”

The fact that he’s coherent enough to remember my name gives me even more hope. But his voice . . . it’s raw and tinged with so much sadness that it nearly breaks my heart.

“What are you doing?”

“It’s none of your business. Go away.”

“No.”

His eyes flash with anger.

“Screw you.”

“Don’t jump and maybe I’ll let you.”

It’s a ridiculous thing to say, but I’m desperate. He’d never survive the fall, and I already have enough guilt in my heart to last a lifetime. I don’t need this on my conscience, too.

The man blinks rapidly, as if he’s trying to comprehend what I said.

“Tempting, but trust me. I’m not worth saving.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“Believe it,” he whispers. “Please, Carrie. Just . . . go.”

I shake my head and take a step closer.

Keep him talking.

“I don’t even know your name. You know mine. That’s not fair.”

He looks surprised. “You don’t recognize me?”

“Should I?”

“Wow. That’s . . . refreshing, actually.”

I glance around. Surely someone has noticed us and called the cops by now. But I don’t hear sirens, so I keep talking, hoping the man will come to his senses.

I offer him my hand. “My name is Carrie Malone. What’s yours?”

“Josh Bennett.”

The name sounds vaguely familiar.

“Nice to meet you, Josh. Now, would you please place both legs on this side of the barrier before I have a heart attack?”

Josh looks down into the river.

“Please? Let me call your family.”

It’s the wrong thing to say.

“My family’s dead, which is exactly what I should be. What I want to be.”

I tilted my head. “I apologize. I’ll try to do better. Is there anything else you want since we’re putting everything on the table?”

She hesitated, her fingers worrying the ugly shirt she wore.

“Spit it out.”

“You can’t, um, you can’t mess around while we’re doing . . . while we’re together.”

“Mess around?”

She looked everywhere but at me. “You can’t sleep with other women. I won’t be humiliated like that.”

“So what you’re saying is: I can’t fuck anyone?”

Her cheeks were so red I thought her head would explode; however, she straightened her shoulders and looked right at me. “Yes.”

This was too fun for me.

“Yes, I can fuck around?”

“No!”

“No fucking,” I enunciated the last word.

“No.”

“You expect me to remain celibate the whole time?” I asked, now incredulous.

“I will be, so I expect you to do the same.”

I snorted. “I doubt it’s anything new for you.”

She threw up her hands. “That’s it. You want to fuck someone? Go fuck yourself, VanRyan.”

Melanie Moreland lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-six-plus years. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.

Known as the quiet one with the big laugh, Melanie works at a local university and for its football team. Her job, while demanding, is rewarding as she cheers on her team to victory.

You all know my love for Melanie Moreland’s work and I absolutely loved The Contract. The author, herself, warned me the main character was an asshole and lived up to his name, which happens to be Richard, and we all know what nickname comes from Richard.  Well I loved him!!!!

Richard Van Ryan cares about no-one but himself, everything he does he does it for personal gain or satisfaction.  He treats his co-workers with disdain.  Katharine Elliot is Dick’s PA.  She takes everything he dishes out, does every task he assigns her perfectly.  She loathes him and his loose morals but puts up with him because she needs this job.

Richard gets looked over for a partnership in his firm and decides to look to his company’s competitor for a job. His competitor has different goals for their employees, so to fit in with them he needs to changes his ways and even though he detests Katharine he thinks she is perfect to help him change his image.

Melanie, portrays Richard so well you start to despise him yourself at the beginning of the book but you know there is something there that is redeemable. He is a bad boy and you know how I feel about bad boys that can change.  She brings his discoveries and hardships to life through her words and makes you understand why he is they way he is.  Melanie also makes you realize how strong willed and determined Katharine is, she has lived through challenges and persevered through them all and she takes the roll she now needs to play with grace and determination.  You find yourself encouraging these characters and yelling at them at the same time.

Here is an excerpt, Melanie says it is one of her favorites:

I picked up the remote and hit play, changing the music until a low, gentle melody hummed through the speakers. “Dance with me. Get used to how it feels to be close to me.” I held out my hand, saying the one word I never used with her until the past few days. “Please.” She let me drag her to her feet and awkwardly she moved closer. With a sigh, I wound my arm around her waist, tugged her close, and breathed in the scent of her hair wafting up into the air. We began moving, and I was surprised how natural it felt. Far smaller than the women I was used to, she barely met my shoulders; her head fit under my chin. She seemed slight and fragile in my arms, yet she molded against my body well. After a few minutes, she lost the stiffness in her shoulders, letting me lead her around the room effortlessly. She was unexpectedly graceful as she moved, given how often I had watched her trip on her own feet. A voice spoke in my head, whispering maybe what she needed all along was someone to hold her up, rather than tear her down. That brought me up short, and I jerked back, staring down at her. She blinked up at me, filled with trepidation, and I realized she was expecting some sort of nasty remark. Instead, I cupped her cheek, and her eyes grew wider. “What are you doing?”

“Kissing you.”

“Why?”

“Practice.”

So I read this book, yes the one who’s lovely, gorgeous cover is right there and it wrecked me, made me cry, made me laugh, made me hope, and made me bask in the glory of my imagination of tattooed men with so, so many troubles.  I am an angst girl, give me angst and I wallow in it and come out better for it.

I usually don’t “write” reviews, Kim and I usually talk about them on the monthly podcast but since we just recorded yesterday and I just finished this book this morning, I thought that I would put my thoughts down, before I forgot them.  I fell in love with this emotional book long before it was published, I fell in love with the way the author pulled every emotional feeling out of me with her words.  In no way did I go through anything like Hadley and Josh did but when I first read these words I was riddled with anxiety and  going through a bought of serious depression so I could relate somewhat to the feelings they were going through.  During this time, reading became my solace, my safe place, my escape from the everyday.  This book along with others pulled me above the surface, let me breathe, and made me realize that we can get up everyday, we can function, and live our lives.  Ok so enough with the emotional stuff.

I was so excited when Tyler announced she was publishing The Debt, I was giddy!  Not just for my love of tattooed men, but that I would be able to tell others about this amazing, at least to me, writer.  So here I am telling you to go read this book!!! Right now, or rather when it is released on May 10th.  I am not going to tell you the story line, I will just put the summary down below this soliloquy of babbling I just put you through.  I want you to read it on your own and come to your own discovery of these characters. I will talk about it during our June Podcast though, so stay tuned.

Summary for The Debt

Hadley’s my best friend. We share a house, our friends, a life. She knows all my secrets . . . except one. My desperate need for her is inked on my body, it’s the best I can do. But Hadley needs to hear the words . . .

Growing up as foster kids, Hadley made me feel whole-sane. And what did I do? I destroyed our chance to be together. I ran out on Hadley when I should have stayed, and something broke between us. Now I’ll do anything to fix it.

I’ll never leave her again. I won’t ever let her feel afraid again. But the more I try to protect her from my pain, the more I just make things worse. I’m terrified that if I tell her everything, she’ll never forgive me. I’m even more terrified that it may be too late to make her mine.
